Fred Nolting dies at 80

Fred Nolting, who worked his way up to senior VP of post-production at MGM/UA over the course of an almost five-decade career, died of cancer on Nov. 13, his 80th birthday, in Mission Viejo, Calif. Born in Los Angeles, Nolting started in the business in the mail/shipping department at Metrocolor Lab at the age of 16. By the 1960s he was a color timer, then a customer service representative. After a six-month stint at Deluxe Lab in 1977, he returned to MGM as director of post-production; in 1980, in the wake of the merger, he became director of post for MGM/UA. He was promoted to vice president of post in 1987 and then later to senior VP, retiring from MGM/UA in 1992. In 1993 Nolting joined Sony to participate in the development of cinema sound system SDDS but retired for good in 1994. First wife Joanne Nolting died in 1987. Survivors include Nolting's second wife, Lila Nolting; son Kevin, a film editor; daughter Nancy Van Hoven; and three grandchildren. Contact Variety Staff at news@variety.com
