In Recognition of 'Threequel' Being Taken Off the Dictionary, 9 Great Threequels

Sad news today from the field of words: the Concise Oxford British Dictionary introduced that it is twelfth edition would no more range from the word “threequel.” (Also gone, “cassette player” be sad for that 󈨔s.) In recognition from the very much departed “threequel” — understood to be “the third film, book, event, etc. inside a series another follow up,” it'll still come in the less concise Oxford Dictionary of British — Movieline has put together a listing of nine great third films. Click ahead to disagree using the list! The Great, unhealthy and also the Ugly, 1966 (dir. Sergio Leone) Not always an immediate follow up to some Fistful of Dollars as well as for a Couple of Dollars More, however the Good, unhealthy and also the Ugly is Sergio Leone’s final entry in the Dollars Trilogy with Clint Eastwood because the Guy without any Title. Thank heavens Hollywood fears anything having a cowboy hat now, otherwise there’s a high probability all of this-time classic would obtain the remake treatment — most likely with Katy Perry sampling the famous Ennio Morricone theme song for that soundtrack. Rocky III, 1982 (dir. Sylvester Stallone) Thunderlips. Clubber Lang. The dying of Mickey. “Eye from the Tiger.” That absurd training montage. “What’s your conjecture for that fight?” “Pain.” Possibly not the very best threequel ever, but the most fun. The Exorcist: Episode IV — Return from the Jedi, 1983 (dir. Richard Marquand) Mock the Ewoks all that's necessary, but the reality is that Return from the Jedi is really a remarkably watchable little bit of sci-fi adventure fun — particularly in its final act, once the fight for Luke’s soul is mix-cut using the Digital rebel uprising and Han and Leia’s tries to bring the Dying Star shields lower. Note: that one might have aged so mainly because in comparison towards the excruciating The Exorcist prequels it’s like Citizen Kane. Also: Jabba the Hutt! Indiana Johnson and also the Last Campaign, 1989 (dir. Steven Spielberg) Featuring the final great Harrison Ford performance — or at best the final role where he appeared to become taking pleasure in themself (sorry, but Dr. Richard Kimble was too going to have some fun) — The Final Campaign is geek nirvana. Indiana Johnson and Mission Impossible against Nazis inside a race for that Ultimate Goal? You've selected sensibly. Die Hard Having a Vengeance, 1995 (dir. John McTiernan) After Renny Harlin skyrocketed the Die Hard formula with Die Hard 2: Die Harder (still can’t think that’s the subtitle), original Die Hard director John McTiernan came back for any very worthy follow-as much as his beloved first film. Because the downtrodden and hungover John McClane in Die Hard Having a Vengeance, Bruce Willis is perfection, and that he will get fun, scenery-eating support from Samuel L. Jackson (in the height of his screaming prowess) and Jeremy Irons (essentially twirling a hidden mustache). The kitty-and-mouse plot is really a hoot, the brand new You are able to City setting is really a found diamond to use it set pieces, and also the “yippy ki-yay, motherfucker!” comes right when you wish it in the future. A champion. The The almighty from the Rings: The Return from the King, 2003 (dir. Jackson) An apparent entry on any listing of threequels, however in a period of blockbuster threequel busts (see Revenge from the Sith, Pirates from the Caribbean: At World’s Finish, and — for many — Transformers: Dark from the Moon), a superb achievement of finality. It might most likely do with one or three less being, but Jackson’s work here's indisputable. Also, when pushing for Andy Serkis to obtain an Oscar nomination for Rise from the Planet from the Apes, remember he never was much better than as Gollum in King. Pusher III, 2005 (dir. Nicolas Winding Refn) From Movieline’s 𔄟 Works of art from the 󈧄s You’ve Likely Never Witnessed” by S.T. VanAirsdale: “As the boy of 1 of Denmark’s most legendary filmmakers, you most likely might have foreseen a minimum of a couple of from the rebellion issues negatively effecting Nicolas Winding Refn’s first couple of violent, aimless records in the Pusher trilogy. Yet when he arrived at the 2nd film’s tiring denouement in 2004, you could also sense Refn was exorcising whatever had held back his kinetic portraits of existence in Copenhagen’s criminal underworld (in addition to his difficult British-language debut Fear X). Closing the series in 2005 with Pusher III (cheerily subtitled I’m the Angel of Dying), Refn inspections in using the earlier films’ drug baron Milo (Zlatko Buric). A junkie aging for that worse every single day, and tied to the additional responsibility of organizing his spoiled daughter’s birthday celebration, Milo decides against his better judgment to market an enormous load of incorrectly acquired ecstasy. That needs the intersection of a number of Copenhagen’s least savory gangsters, a difficult epidemic of food poisoning, a couple of hundred consumed cigarettes as well as an unspeakably nasty final act which makes Refn’s 2009 prison fable Bronson seem like an afterschool special on deliquency. Additionally, it redeems the very first two Pusher films, that was no small task. (Trailer very NSFW.)” The Bourne Ultimatum, 2007 (dir. Paul Greengrass) Real talk: the Matt Damon-brought Bourne movies all blend together. For reference, Ultimatum may be the one with Clive Owen the main one with Karl Urban the main one with Edgar Martinez, that kick-ass vehicle chase through lower Manhattan and Bourne’s homecoming/final swan dive. Paul Greengrass stored things lean and mean in the last moments as franchise mind coach, while Damon was at his brusque and brutal best. Jeremy Renner and Co. have large, military-released boots to fill for that Bourne Legacy. Toy Story 3, 2010 (dir. Lee Unkrich) It’s type of impossible to possess a listing of threequels without Toy Story 3. Beloved by experts (except for Armond Whitened), beloved by audiences, and beloved by Academy people, the 3rd film within the near two-billion-grossing Pixar franchise worked with losing innocence and growing into their adult years much better than just about any live-action film release recently. Translation: I cried. You probably did too.

Warner Music To Become Run By MGM Turnaround Professional Stephen Cooper

What were individuals at Access Industries searching for inside a candidate to exchange Edgar Bronfman Junior as Boss of Warner Music? Somebody that knows the background music industry thoroughly -- or who are able to hob-nob with Warner's money-makerssuch as In Demand Chili All kinds of peppers, Missy Elliot, Randy Travis, and Aretha Franklin? Apparently not. The pr release aboutStephen Cooper's new gigrunning Warner Music notes that heis about the board of "among the world's biggest olefins, polyolefins, chemicals and refining companies" -- and it has "a lot more than 3 decades of expertise like a financial consultant." I guess Warner did not wish to come out and state that Cooper is really a turnaround expert that has labored with corporate basket cases including Enron, KrispyKreme Inflatible donuts, and many lately MGM because it experienced personal bankruptcy. Bronfman maintained looks, stating that Warner Music is "well-situated because of its next exciting chapter." He'll switch jobs with Cooper, who was simply chairman, to satisfy "my desire to pay attention to growth possibilities." Cooper will handle day-to-day procedures. Lyor Cohen, who runs the recorded music unit, and Cameron Strang, who's responsible for posting operation Warner/Chappell Music, will are accountable to Cooper. He might have to make lots of large choices soon: Warner is among the leading bidders for EMI because the auction, run by Citigroup, makes its way into its home stretch. Additionally towards the Cooper appointment, Warner added financier Thomas H. Lee to its board, growing the amount of company directors to 10.

Emmys 2011: Will 'The Big Bang Theory' Cancel Itself Out of the Comedy Actor Race?

If Steve Carell walks away from the Emmys on Sept. 18 with his first trophy for NBC's The Office, he will be good -- and familiar -- company.our editor recommendsEmmy Nominations 2011: Full ListEmmy nominations by the numbers...Related Topics•Emmys The only other actor to score a win in the last year of playing his lead comedy role was, ironically, the actor who originated The Office's bumbling manager persona: Ricky Gervais, star of the British series, took home gold in 2007 for his performance in HBO's two-seasoner, Extras. VIDEO: Emmy Roundtable: Comedy Actors Although many feel Carell should be a lock this year, he has two glaring strikes agianst him. One, Emmy history shows that no comedy lead actor has ever won for the first time after a long run of nominations -- in Carell's case, six, one for each year he was on the show. Second, the pool of contenders this year is so diverse and spoiler-ready, a win for Carell would be the least exciting of possible outcomes. In the absence of Curb Your Enthusiasm's Larry David (the HBO series didn't air in 2010), Carell has formidable competition: stalwart contender and two-time winner Alec Baldwin (NBC's 30 Rock), last year's surprise victor Jim Parsons (CBS' The Big Bang Theory) and his co-star Johnny Galecki, FX's one-man band Louis C.K. (Louie) and Matt LeBlanc in his first cable series (Showtime's Episodes). VIDEO: Emmy Roundtable: Comedy Showrunners This year's leading-man race boasts perhaps the most meaningful mix of talent -- and networks -- ever assembled in this category, which had never had two entrants from cable comedies in a single year until now. Like Thursday nights throughout the 1990s, the lead comedy actor category has been unabashedly dominated by NBC, which has registered a record 18 wins since 1974. Compare this run to CBS' eight, ABC's seven, USA's three -- that would be Tony Shalhoub's bizarre run of Monk wins in the early to mid-2000s -- and, perhaps in its worst-performing Emmy niche, HBO's paltry one for Gervais. NBC still has a strong presence this year with noms for Carell and Baldwin, but the latter's Emmy run during 30 Rock's peak years is likely to have been his last. CBS' insular rivalry is actually making bigger news this year: With Big Bang, it's the only network that can boast two lead nominees in the same show across the entire Emmy ballot. PHOTOS: Emmy Nominees 2011 The milestone isn't lost on academy chair John Shaffner. "It's like Oscar and Felix being nominated in the same year," he says of the history-making 1975 race that pitted ABC's The Odd Couple stars Jack Klugman and Tony Randall against each other (Randall won). "Parsons and Galecki are a similarly unique straight man/funny man duo." Unfortunately, the most recent time two lead network actors battled each other, it didn't work out for either of them: In 2002, the Friends duo of LeBlanc and Matthew Perry went head-to-head but lost to Ray Romano. That doesn't bode well for Big Bang's Galecki and Parsons as being great at different roles within large ensembles can put voters in a pickle. This is what makes cable underdogs Louis C.K. and LeBlanc -- both of whom play tweaked versions of themselves -- exciting spoilers. It's hard to believe LeBlanc netted Showtime's first comedy actor nomination for playing ... LeBlanc. His hilarious game-for-anything spin on his own celebrity in Episodes has proved a crucial moment in his career. Turns out, the guy can act. PHOTOS: Emmy Nominations 2011: Snubs and Shockers "I am delighted for Matt -- he gave one of the most remarkable performances as someone playing himself, but not quite himself, I've ever seen," Shaffner says. The same can be said for FX's first comedy nominee -- that's a first for actor, actress or series -- Louie creator and star Louis C.K. Like LeBlanc, the New York-based comedian plays a divorced fortysomething guy with kids who is trying to manage loneliness, love and career. But it's pretty clear that there's little distance between TV Louie and his real-life counterpart. Sure, David's Curb has never won an Emmy, but that doesn't mean Louis C.K. isn't poised to make history. With his nomination, you might say he already has. But where does this leave Carell? Much as we'd love to watch him ride a last swell of "that's what she said" jokes to Emmy glory, he simply has too much competition to rely on nostalgia votes. Whatever happens in September, chances are very good there's gold in Carell's future regardless. For as TV grads go, few have been better poised for Oscar glory. 'Brother,' golf lift CBS on Sunday

CBS cruised to a primetime ratings victory Sunday, as a golf overrun led to higher-than-usual ratings. Its ''Big Brother'' was the No. 1 show in demos, while ABC scored with a country music special but Fox struggled with its new sketch comedy series. Preliminary Nielsen national estimates for CBS are murky due to a roughly 64-minute overrun from golf's PGA Championship, which resulted in the sliding of the net's lineup in most of the country. In the evening's opening hour, golf did a 1.7/6 in 18-49 and 9.3 million viewers overall, significantly outperforming the summer demo average of ''60 Minutes.'' The newsmag then followed at 8 o'clock in most of the country (2.0/6 in 18-49, 7.9 million viewers overall), followed by ''Big Brother'' at 9 (2.5/6 in 18-49, 7.2 million viewers overall) and ''Same Name'' at 10 (1.5/4 in 18-49, 4.8 million viewers overall). The Eye won the night in demos as well as total viewers, logging its best Sunday averages of summer. ABC drew tiny numbers kicking off the night with the special ''I Am First: Science is Rock and Roll'' (0.5/2 in 18-49, 2.2 million viewers overall) before picking up nicely with the three-hour concert special ''CMA Music Festival: Country's Night to Rock'' (1.6/5 in 18-49, 7.0 million viewers overall), which was down a tick in 18-49 from last year's airing on a Wednesday while logging its second largest overall audience in six years. At Fox, repeats of comedies ''American Dad'' (1.0/3 in 18-49, 2.1 million viewers overall), ''Bob's Burgers'' (0.9/3 in 18-49, 1.9 million viewers overall), ''The Simpsons'' (1.4/4 in 18-49, 3.0 million viewers overall) and ''Family Guy'' (1.7/5 in 18-49, 3.5 million viewers overall) were followed by the debut of ''In the Flow with Affion Crockett,'' which settled for a 1.2/3 in 18-49 and 2.5 million viewers overall from 9 to 10. It beat NBC's ''Marriage Ref'' but finished well behind CBS (whose ''Big Brother'' was its surprise competition due to golf) and ABC. NBC ran fourth in demos even though ''Dateline'' was on the high side (1.2/4 in 18-49, 6.5 million viewers overall), taking advantage of its lack of ''60 Minutes'' competition in most of the country to rack up its best demo score for a Sunday edition since May and its largest overall audience for the newsmag on the night since March 2009. The net then dropped off from there, but remained steady with a repeat ''Minute to Win It'' (0.9/3 in 18-49, 3.5 million viewers overall) and original episodes of ''Marriage Ref'' at both 9 (0.9/2 in 18-49, 2.7 million viewers overall) and 10 (0.9/2 in 18-49, 2.7 million viewers overall). Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: CBS, 1.9/5; ABC, 1.4/4; Fox, 1.2/4; Univision, 1.1/3; NBC, 1.0/3. In total viewers: CBS, 7.3 million; ABC, 5.8 million; NBC, 3.8 million; Univision, 3.1 million; Fox, 2.6 million. Contact Rick Kissell at rick.kissell@variety.com

Nicolas Winding Refn Talks Drive

Empire sits lower with him at Large ScreenWe're not squeamish at Empire. In the end, already at Giant Screen we have been proven the very first scene of Final Destination 5, and believe us, it isn't for that average person. But present day exclusive Drive clip of Ryan 'Baby Goose' Gosling getting a bit brutal on the elevator companion - in just minutes after kissing his girlfriend (performed by Carey Mulligan) - really did, for want of the better word, stick the boot in. For individuals individuals who haven't examined a clip for that significantly-acclaimed thriller, please so below, as it truly is something - then one pretty gosh darn violent. As we saw the special clip, and merely before we had a clip once again, the Cannes-award-winning director Nicolas Winding Refn, the guy who formerly introduced us Bronson and Valhalla Rising, were built with a talk to Empire's guy Damon Smart on stage, and it is really an amazing anecdote he told us.... "I had been initially set to perform a movie with Harrison Ford where he plays a secret agent who dies in the finish - but simply because through wasn't likely to work... So as i was focusing on this stuff, I acquired a phone call from Ryan Gosling. I'd never met him, but he requested basically would meet him, and that i stated yes. Therefore i visited meet him, but oddly, I'd got an extremely high fever flying in therefore i was taking these anti flu things, which American anti-flu situations are strong. Essentially, I had been high like a kite, like I had been on morphine or heroin or something like that, could not say a sentence only at that restaurant with Ryan. . He was all professional, however i was sitting and that i could not move. He'd seen my films and understood a great deal about them, and that he desired to perform a movie known as Drive depending on this very bestseller. It had been just like a blind date, and that i only agreed to be attempting to say 'When are we able to leave?' . Eventually I requested him, "Can you please take me home?" I had been too sick to consider taxis, the thing is. Within the vehicle, another awkward silence. 'Can't Fight This Feeling' by REO Speedwagon came about the radio. Then all of a sudden, here' is at Ryan's vehicle, crying for this song about the radio. I had been singing, "I can not fight these feelings anymore!Inch, banging my fists against my legs towards the drum solo. I had been getting all of this emotional catharsis, and that i screamed in Ryan's face, "I First Got It, I Understand WHAT DRIVE IS! He drives around in cars during the night and the emotional relief is pop music. So this is exactly why I made the film. "Simple as that actually. He finished off his Giant Screen talk to this little nugget: Drive is extremely exciting, simple, only 1 hour 30 minutes lengthy, and I am really happy by using it. Lovely stuff! So anticipate your dose of Ryan kicking ass and driving just like a maniac in Drive come September 23.

TCA: 'The League' Producers Reveal "Plan B" For Season 3 If National football league Season Was Cancelled

How did the producers of FX's comedy The League spent their recent hiatus? Praying that you will see a football season his or her show involves an illusion football league and focusing on a contingency plan just in case the National football league and also the gamers did not arrived at deal. Plan B revolved round the men losing their marbles, co-creator Shaun Schaffer stated throughout a TCA panel for that show today. Poor Andre (Paul Scheer) wouldve invest of his life blood into Fantasy National basketball association, a mention of the another professional sport whose months are in risk. The simple truth is ... we interceded there could be football, we frantically, frantically wanted there to become football, and that we anxiously waited. And we anxiously waited and anxiously waited. Forex was awesome around pushing our shooting date and also the airdate to ensure that we're able to make certain (you will see a football season)." Using the labor dispute resolved just lately, the series has become so at the start of production on Season 3 that a few of the footage within the promo reel proven was shot last evening, Schaffer stated. We recognized we're able to write the show without football, Jackie Schaffer stated. We all do love fantasy football and you want to ensure that it stays included in the show, but you want to continue exploring (the guys') lives.

Moscow campaign cries foul

New Jersey Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov's political campaign was thought to be backed by TV execs.MOSCOW -- Reports that the chief producer of state TV Channel One was behind a nationwide billboard campaign promoting the entry into politics of billionaire basketball fan and New Jersey Jets owner Mikhail Prokhorov turned out to have been exaggerated.A huge image of wealthy metals magnate Prokhorov has been plastered on billboards from Moscow to Omsk this past week, accompanied by slogans such as "Who is right, is stronger."The campaign is part of a pre-election stunt for right-of-center party Right Cause -- of which Prokhorov is leader. It aroused interest because it gave its website address as made-in-russia, the name of the production company run by Channel One's chief producer Andrei Boltenko and business partner Anton Nenashev. But reports that the duo was behind the billboards were wrong: their company is MIR Made in Russia; its website is made-in-russia.tv; the Prokhorov campaign site is made-in-russia.ru.Right Cause was quoted as saying: "There was a confusion in the titles; the studio MIR Made in Russia has nothing to do with this campaign."

Should Angelina Jolie Retire?

If Angelina Jolie decided to quit making movies, would you miss her? The 36-year-old is thinking about winding down her acting career, she suggested in an interview this weekend with the Financial Times. (Link is subscription only, but an article at Access Hollywood includes major excerpts.) She says she no longer loves acting "as much as I did," and that she and Brad Pitt would like to devote more time to raising their six kids and to their philanthropic work. "As Brad and I get older we're going to do fewer films. I've been working for a long time, he's been working for a long time," she said. "We've had a nice run and don't want to be doing this our whole lives. There are a lot of other things to do." Jolie remains a huge star at the height of her international popularity, but if she did quit acting, would there be an international outcry? After all, despite having appeared in nine movies in the last five years, she seems to have been absent from the screen for quite a while. Look at some of those recent movies. Many feature Jolie in roles that any competent Hollywood leading lady could have played. Her role in 'The Tourist' was largely decorative. 'Salt' and 'Wanted' required a lot of physicality but (because those characters were deliberately opaque and mysterious) not a great deal of subtlety in acting. Her role as a spy's ignored wife in 'The Good Shepherd' was especially thankless. And would you miss Jolie if someone else's voice was behind Tigress in the 'Kung Fu Panda' films? Only a few of her recent roles have played to her strengths. 'A Mighty Heart' was informed by her passion for international current events. 'Changeling' was an acting challenge that sent her character into a mental hospital -- an extreme version of the setting where she won her Oscar a decade ago, for 'Girl, Interrupted.' And 'Beowulf' called upon her to revive the slinky sex-bomb image she'd long since abandoned, even though you didn't technically see her in the film. Granted, actors threaten to retire all the time without ever making good on those threats. Jolie could do so without actually quitting filmmaking; she's already transitioning to a behind-the-camera career with her directorial debut, 'In the Land of Blood and Honey,' opening Dec. 23. Focusing on the 1990s war in Bosnia, it neatly dovetails with her humanitarian work in refugee camps and crisis areas. Still, it seems like Jolie has already been winding down her career for a while now, gradually absenting herself from major screen roles, even the ones she actually played. A lot of the fascination with Jolie doesn't have anything to do with her acting career in the first place, but rather with her history of high-profile romances (occasionally accompanied by scandal), her many kids and her philanthropy. In those respects, she's a lot like Elizabeth Taylor. Taylor never really retired, though during the last 20 years of her life, she let her acting career grind to a halt. Nevertheless, she was famous enough that she could coast on that fame for the rest of her life and use that celebrity clout to advance the charitable causes that were important to her. Jolie could follow that example, and movie fans wouldn't even have to miss her. Whether or not she retires from movies, she'll never really be out of the limelight.
